CALIFORNIA STATE ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS ENDORSE COLONEL DOUG APPLEGATE FOR CONGRESS

Col. Applegate is the leader that will fight for California’s working families and stand-up to Washington Insiders, said CA State Association of Letter Carriers President Harold Kelso

May 19, 2017 – Today, the California State Association of Letter Carriers (CSALC) endorsed Colonel Doug Applegate for California’s 49th Congressional District, saying he is the best candidate able to defeat Washington insider, Darrell Issa.

“We need change in Washington DC and Col. Doug Applegate is the best candidate to send Darrell Issa packing to an early retirement,” said California State Association of Letter Carriers president, Harold Kelso. “Col. Applegate has the courage to stand-up to Donald Trump and the Washington insiders, he is not afraid to fight for workers, students and seniors. We urge our labor brothers and sisters and the residents of the 49th Congressional District to join us in supporting Col. Doug Applegate for Congress.”

The enthusiastic endorsement was announced today at the CSALC Convention in Anaheim, California and is the first labor union endorsement for Col. Applegate this election cycle.  The 38,000-member California organization is a subset of the NALC - National Association of Letter Carriers.

“I am honored to have the endorsement of the California State Association of Letter Carriers,” said Colonel Applegate. “I am running for Congress to protect California’s working families because I come from a union household myself and understand the challenges they face.  In Congress I will fight against privatization of the postal service, fight to maintain direct home delivery and fight to protect their jobs so they can continue to support their families.”

A recent poll among likely June 2018 primary voters in California’s 49th Congressional District clearly demonstrates that Darrell Issa remains in a very vulnerable position, and that Doug Applegate is the candidate best positioned to beat him. Applegate and Issa remain in a virtual dead heat Issa (39% and 43% of the vote, respectively). Meanwhile, Democrats are solidly united behind Col. Applegate, and no other potential primary candidate cracks double digits.
