APPLEGATE STATEMENT ON COMEY TESTIMONY

San Clemente, CA -- Earlier today, former FBI director James B. Comey provided testimony before the United States Senate Intelligence Committee on private conversations he had with President Donald J. Trump, and subsequent memos he drafted, which were eventually leaked to the media. In reaction to Comey's testimony, congressional candidate Doug Applegate issued the following statement:

"I joined the Marines Corp in 1974 at the height of the Cold War and served as a warrior in that fight. Through his testimony today, James Comey confirmed to the Senate Intelligence Committee that Russia is, in fact, coming after America. Trump and the GOP Congress know we're is under attack, but have done nothing to protect our most sacred right, our right to vote.

The sacrifices made by each generation, from the American Revolution to the present, stand to be thrown away if we stay the present course. Every true American patriot must join the fight to stop this treason of our democracy.”

CA APWU ENDORSES APPLEGATE FOR CONGRESS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CALIFORNIA STATE AMERICAN POSTAL WORKERS UNION ENDORSES COLONEL DOUG APPLEGATE FOR CONGRESS

We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Colonel Applegate in his bid to replace Darrel Issa, said California State APWU President Mike Evans

May 23, 2017 – Today, the California State American Postal Workers Union (APWU) endorsed Colonel Doug Applegate for California’s 49th Congressional District, saying he is the candidate that will fight for working families and bring much needed change to Washington DC.

“Darrel Issa is no friend to working families and Colonel Applegate is the candidate that will send him home packing,” said California State APWU president, Mike Evans. “In Congress, Colonel Applegate will fight against privatization of the postal service, maintain direct home delivery, push for postal reform including for some basic banking transactions at post offices, as well as restoring mail delivery standards that were in effect on July 2012.”

“Thank you to my labor brothers and sisters at the California State APWU for their endorsement today,” said Colonel Applegate. “I am running for Congress to protect California’s working families because I come from a union household myself and understand the challenges they face in supporting their families. I will not forget where I come from.”

Momentum continues to grow for the Democratic candidate to replace Darrell Issa. In the past week, Colonel Applegate has received the endorsement of the California State Association of Letter Carriers and VoteVets.

A recent poll among likely June 2018 primary voters in California’s 49th Congressional District clearly demonstrates that Darrell Issa remains in a very vulnerable position, and that Doug Applegate is the candidate best positioned to beat him. Applegate and Issa remain in a virtual dead heat Issa (39% and 43% of the vote, respectively). Meanwhile, Democrats are solidly united behind Colonel Applegate, and no other potential primary candidate cracks double digits.

When his community needs him, Doug is there.  That kind of dedication, always putting others before himself, is so desperately needed in Washington. He’s going to be a tremendous Congressman for the 49th district.”

APPLEGATE STATEMENT ON TRUMP-RUSSIA COMMISSION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

APPLEGATE STATEMENT ON TRUMP-RUSSIA COMMISSION

San Clemente, CA -- Earlier today, House Democrats announced that they had began to circulate a discharge petition to force a vote on legislation that would create a 12-member bipartisan, independent commission to investigate the allegations that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. In reaction to this move, Congressional Candidate Doug Applegate issued the following statement:

"The White House has consistently ignored Russian cyber attacks on our political process. The subsequent firing of former FBI Director James Comey, and the additional reports concerning former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn did little to ease those concerns. These allegations have the potential to rock the very foundation of our democracy and only serve to further erode the public’s trust in our government. At a time when we need real leadership, the president and his backers in Congress confuse and distract from our democracy to protect their own careers.

The fact is we need mature leadership coming from the legislature, not childish antics and grandstanding. As we move closer to a constitutional crisis, we must demand a thorough investigation to include the full disclosure of any and all memos former Director Comey drafted in the weeks and days leading up to his termination, in addition to Flynn’s ties to the Kremlin.

But what’s even more telling is that Darrell Issa, the self-proclaimed “watchdog” of the House, serves as nothing more than a lapdog for this administration. We demand that Issa sign this discharge petition and vote in support of a full investigation into these allegations. Currently, there is a bipartisan bill, sponsored by two Democrats and two Republicans, to create a Trump-Russia commission. If Darrell was one quarter of the watchdog he claims to be, he needs to show it and sign the petition. Otherwise, we’ll know he opposes an investigation and we will remember that come November 2018.”
