NATIONAL NURSES UNITED ENDORSES COLONEL DOUG APPLEGATE FOR CONGRESS
We are proud to endorse Doug Applegate for Congress because he supports single-payer Medicare for All
so that everyone gets the therapeutic health care they deserve, said Deborah Burger, RN, NNU co-president.
August 10, 2017 – Today, National Nurses United (NNU) endorsed Colonel Doug Applegate for California’s 49th Congressional District, saying he is the candidate that supports Main Street and not Wall Street and espouses policies on education, health care and the economy that will benefit working people, not the very rich.
“The people of the 49th Congressional District need a change of leadership in Washington,” Burger continued. “Doug Applegate’s experience, progressive values and dedication to our communities prepare him well to be our Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.”
"I could not be prouder to stand shoulder to shoulder with National Nurses United in the pursuit of Medicare for All,” said Col. Applegate. “There is no group that has been more visionary and tireless in organizing to make quality healthcare a human right for ALL Americans. I am humbled and honored by their endorsement, and look forward to achieving our common cause in Congress."
National Nurses United has 150,000 members across the United States, including more than 100,000 in California with its affiliate, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee. In addition to promoting Single Payer healthcare, NNU has been a tireless champion of workplace safety, patient care, climate action, environmental justice, and economic reform.
“It will be my duty and privilege to work with NNU to develop effective legislation to advance these causes.” Applegate continued. “Every day, in hospitals and clinics across the country, NNU’s members care for others. It will be one of my priorities in office to care, in turn, for nurses. I will protect the rights of nurses and other healthcare workers to organize their workplaces, bargain collectively, and promote the welfare of themselves, their patients, and their families. NNU has placed their trust in me to fight for their interests and for our shared values and priorities. I am honored by their faith and will work relentlessly to justify it."
Momentum continues to grow for the Democratic candidate to replace Darrell Issa. Colonel Applegate has received the endorsement of the California State Association of Letter Carriers, California State American Postal Workers Union (APWU) and VoteVets. Applegate will again challenge controversial incumbent Rep. Darrell Issa to represent the 49th District in the June 2018 primary, promising to overcome the narrowest (1,621) vote gap of 2016 election cycle.
